implications of certain ruminant TFAs. In particular, moderate consumption of ruminant TFAs was not associated with a significant increase in cardiovascular risk, although further studies are needed to understand the implications of various TFA isomers. In addition, certain ruminant TFAs, including vaccenic acid and C9,T11-CLA, have been shown to have cancer-protective factors in animal models, although human studies are limited. More data are needed to determine if the changes in TFA levels may be attributed primarily to the 2003 legislative changes. It would be particularly interesting to see data regarding plasma content of TFAs before and after regional trans-fat bans. Additionally, although the 2003 legislation required labeling for TFAs, there is still a significant amount of TFA content in food products; plasma profiles may be further improved with improved TFA labeling.

Growth Pattern of Untreated Boys with Simple Virilizing Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia Indicates Relative Androgen Insensitivity during the First Six Months of Life
Context: Mild forms of simple virilizing congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) may be missed in newborn screening. In the pre-newborn-screening era, missed diagnosis of simple virilizing CAH was not infrequent in boys. Elevated adrenal androgens lead to accelerated growth and bone maturation. Traditional treatment of CAH consists of the suppression of ACTH through glucocorticoid replacement, in ...

The Newborn Screening Study Group first introduced newborn screening in the Philippines in 1996. This group of pediatricians and obstetricians from 24 hospitals in the metropolitan Manila area developed a newborn screening program: (1) to establish the incidence of six metabolic conditions--congenital hypothyroidism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, galactosemia, phenylketonuria, homocystinuria ...

BACKGROUND Newborn screening (NBS) for the classic forms of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is mandated in all states in the United States. Compared with other NBS disorders, the false-positive rate (FPR) of CAH screening remains high and has not been significantly improved by adjusting 17α-hydroxyprogesterone cutoff values for birth weight and/or gestational age. Minnesota was the first s...
متن کاملNeonatal screening for congenital adrenal hyperplasia in Taiwan: a pilot study.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is an autosomal recessive disorder with defects in steroidogenesis. Its wide and non-specific clinical spectrum poses problems for early diagnosis. Without a screening program, affected newborns may be missed, even though they have a life-threatening illness. The purpose of this study was to survey the prevalence and phenotype of CAH i...
